Oakwood bespoke colour finish with Pallmann Magic Oil | Art of Clean

I want to share with you the special qualities of Pallmann Magic Oil, which is a great product to use on the installation, renovation and maintenance of wood flooring.

This morning Pierre was mixing a bespoke colour using Pallmann Magic Oil 2K on a sample piece of solid oak wood to show to a customer.

Before applying the oil mix, the wood sample was sanded back using a 60, 80 and 100 grit sanding paper.  The wood was also water popped, which means light moisture is used to open the grain, which in turns swells the wood fibres and more colour is accepted into the wood.

The oil is applied to the wood

The oil is then mixed using 15% black and 85% brown.  The oil is applied to the wood and forced into the fibres of wood with a green hand pad and the excess removed.

Pierre was using a piece of oak, but Pallmann Magic Oil works well on pine and most other types of wood.

As well as black and brown the other main colours are white, grey, dark brown, red brown and natural .

Some of the benefits of using magic oil, apart from the ones already mentioned are the four hours drying time and so the floor can be used much quicker, as opposed to 12 hours with other brand floor oils.

Once the excess oil is removed the transformation is remarkeable

Magic Oil also comes with a hardener which makes it much harder wearing than many other oils. Also, if the floor is scratched the floor can be easily repaired with simply keying back the area and then apply a re-oil.

In the case of coloured oil, you would need to key back the whole floor.

Below is a previous example using Treatex (left) and Liberon (right).

Take a look at the amazing transformation of this oak floor | Art of Clean

I know I keep saying this, but I am amazed by how our service technicians at the Art of Clean, are able to transform, what looks like a really worn out and tired oak floor and turn it into an oak floor to be proud of.

Over the past few days, Nathan and Ben, have been working on a large oak kitchen, diner and hallway floor.

"The floor was in a sorry state and it was a job just to remove the original heavily worn lacquer.

It was job in itself to remove the original heavily worn lacquer

The customer was still undecided on the colour of the oil, even by the time we had set to work but this wasn't a problem.  After talking her through the options, she went for a natural oil, which was an excellent choice and came up superbly.

The job involved doing two hallways, one of the hallways had really thin parquet blocks which was in need of a good filling," said Nathan.

Please take a look at the before and after photos.  We would really appreciate your feedback.

And if you have any questions about this job or indeed you might have a job of your own and would like some advice, please don't hesitate to give the team a call.

Beautiful Wooden Floors In Four Simple Steps

Here at the Art of Clean, we understand that the process of choosing a company to restore your wooden floor isn't easy.

If you are thinking about having your wood floors sanded, we encourage you to follow these four simple steps.

Step 1: Having your floors sanded is a commitment.  The build up of dirt on untreated or worn floorboards, could mean the floor might need to be replaced earlier and cost you more than having it sanded and finished.

Step 2:  What are your objectives?  You can have only the top soil removed or do you want the scratches and the signs of wear and tear completely removed from your floor?  Make sure you choose a reputable and honest company.  It is always best to work with a company which can supply you with references from previous work.

Step 3: Always ask questions, we are very happy to answer.    Here are a few questions to ask a floor care company before they begin their work;

  • Can I see a copy of your Insurance Certificate?
  • What finishing product are you putting on the floor?
  • Will the product smell?
  • Is the process dust free?
  • What guarantee of quality do you give?
  • What different options to finish do I have?
Step 4: Only when you are satisfied that you are working with an honest and competent professional, invite a representative from the company to your home and ask for an estimate in writing.

Soft white pine floorboards - an interior designers dream

At the Art of Clean, one of our biggest accolades is the feedback we receive from our clients, telling us what a wonderful job we have done.  It feels good to be able to make a difference in the lives of our customers by offering the best cleaning service in Cambridge, Hertfordshire and Essex.

On Tuesday, Nathan, our Sales and Service Technician, had been sent out on a job to a customers house in Cambridge.  As we know from previous blogs, Cambridge has it fair share of traditional artisan terraced homes with architectural and historical features such as cast iron fireplaces, stain glass windows and pine stripped doors.  An interior designers dream!

The job Nathan had been sent on was to sand clients white soft pine floor.  On closer inspection of the current state of the floor, Nathan was greeted with what could only be described as a bit of a bodge job.  The floor was full of chatter marks and drum marks.

Sanding the wrong way and some of the edging was terrible.  Let alone the actual lacquer job on it! The room was not very big but was a challenge getting everything flat and back to how it should.

After oiling the floor, the warm rich colour of the pine floor, sprang back in life.

How do I look after my solid oak floor?

Here at Art of Clean, we love to keep you informed on what the team have been working on recently.

This week, Nathan and Ben were sent out to sand and oil a oak wood floor.

The oak wood floor was in pretty good condition, but over time wear and tear had become apparent and with a high volume of traffic through the house, scuff marks and dents in the oak floor had become obvious but with no other issues, made the sanding very straight forward.

Oak wood looking tired and neglected

Due to wood being natural it needs expansion gaps around the edge of the room, so the floor boards were cut short of the wall to allow for movement.  To cover these gaps quadrant beading was placed to finish off the floor to hide these gaps.

Our client wanted all the old beading replacing which was a relatively big job in itself.

Replacement beading

We sanded the floor and finished it to 80 grit.  After sanding, the rest of the day was spent measuring, cutting and pinning down the new oak quadrant beading.

Final process of oiling the floor

Solid oak wood flooring is a joy to have and looked after carefully will be an investment that needs to protecting with the correct care and attention.  Here are some simple steps to maintain your oak wood floor.

  • keep dust and dirt particles away by mopping the floor about once a week, with hand-warm water.  Don't soak the floor with water, just dip the mop into the bucket of water and squeeze firmly.
  • to prevent furniture from damaging the solid oak wood floor, use pads on feet of chairs and tables and rugs are great to stop high volume of traffic from scratching the surface.
  • immediately wipe up all liquid spills of any kind.  Don't risk liquids staining the floor or getting into the gaps between the boards, which could cause swelling.

Keeping our abode beautiful with the Art of Clean

I've always been interested in how some 'clever bods' work out the time we spend on doing things, like eating and sleeping or walking the dog.  So taking that research into consideration, I was intrigued to see how long we spend in our homes and the results are not surprising.

As buying or renting has become one of our biggest expenditures, its obvious that we like to spend time in the comfort of our own homes.  But honestly, we do spend a lot of time sitting around watching television and on average 1.5 years of our entire life spent in the bathroom. So if that's the case, why not make those places special and keep them clean, so they become a really special place for us to be.  And once you've had your carpets, rugs or upholstery cleaned you'll want to spend even more time inside.

There are also health benefits to having carpets and upholstery regularly cleaned, creating a pleasant environment from dirt, dust mites and allergens.  Every household creates dirt and mud which are walked in from shoes and boots, hair and fleas from family pets, spills and mess from drink and food.

Through professional cleaning, your house will look and smell fresh and clean.  And you'll also help to eradicate and stop a build up of dirt, germs and bacteria for a healthier home.

Art of Clean, Abseiling for Charity (EACH)

A couple of months ago, my boss – Pierre, asked me to have a look around the World Wide Web (preferably in the Cambridge locale) and find a charitable challenge. Something that would inspire and see our staff pushing themselves to promote a worthy cause. We do this from time to time (here's Pierre doing the ice bucket challenge). After some hours, I whittled the options down and presented Pierre with my decision – abseiling for EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices).

For those of you that have never abseiled before, it entails a couple of ropes (one for you to direct your rate of decent) and one for the safety bloke (to hold onto in case your rate of decent is a little faster than you’d envisaged). You’re strapped to within an inch of your manhood (see attached photos) and then, you jump, literally.
Now, it’s not the waiting to jump, although that’s a little nerve wracking, it’s not the climb to the top (elevator ride in this case) and it’s not even the casual joking by the safety people about red dots being cleaned off the pavement prior to your jump…it’s the leaning back over the ledge and releasing the rope.
When I proposed this jump, I had, in fact, imagined one or two of your brave and burly chaps on the team to take up the challenge. Short of that, I’d hope Louise, Gail or Laurence might “man-up”…sadly this was not the case. So, when the eyes circled the room, looking for a willing wimp, they settled on me.
To be honest, I’ve para-glided before and I’ve parachuted before, but the first was as a passenger and in a heavy mist, so I couldn’t see anything until it was happening; the second was a tandem jump, as a surprise from my wife on my 35th birthday (you can’t say no when you need to look confident and brave in front of your Mrs), but this one was all but self-inflicted.
Disclaimer: I’m a touch terrified of heights. No, Really!
My legs shake, my arms shake, my feet wobble…

But when you think of the good it does, abseiling for a charity, then you jump. You jump and you think, it’s worth it…and it is.
EACH are a hospice charity (Britain was recently announced as the leader in world-wide hospice care) and it’s their job to support and reassure families and children when they are going through one of the most trying and fraught times of their lives. For this, they are 100% worth the wobbly legs.
Back to the fun…and it actually is, when you get going.
You lean back, jump over the ledge to the wall, releasing a little tension in the rope and drop. You control the rate and after you’ve gotten into the swing of things, it’s fun to go fast.

So, I would say, I recommend abseiling and charitable work and descending off the Guildhall in Cambridge because the view is spectacular and if you have a few friends there, the support makes the jump that much easier.
