Pile Reversal On Rugs

Art of Clean, pile reversal on rugsArt of Clean has already published an article about pile reversal on carpets.  Did you know, you can also get the same marks on rugs?

I don't like to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, any amount of cleaning will not rectify the problem.  The rug isn't dirty, although that's the appearance it is given.  Pile reversal or shading will appear in parts lighter than other parts of the rug and give the effect of a watermark.

As I mentioned in my previous blog post about pile reversal, this anomaly in thick pile rugs, could be the result of several reasons, such as a high volume in traffic or it could be floorboards or tiles from underneath the rug pushing up and causing an indentation.   When the rug is new, the tufts stand straight up but over time, the tufts are pushed and crushed in different directions, causing them the reflect light in different directions.

It's best to look out for these causes first and perhaps the rug could be moved to another area, where it doesn't receive so much wear and tear. Another reason could be the way the rug has been woven but officially it's not seen as an imperfection.

We're going to clean the leather with a specialised solution. So, with some light stroking and gentle agitation, we'll remove that grime, grease and ingrained soil.

Next, we'll rinse the leather. So any left-over dirt is completely removed.

The protection comes last. That's when the colour is restored, the cleanliness is established and the shine needs to be shown.

Floor Boards Shrinking – Find Out Why

Floor Boards Shrinking – Find Out Why

Art of Clean, the Cambridgeshire based wood floor sanding affiliate to Ultimate floor sanding has had a real interesting encounter recently. Here is their story:
An engineered oak floor was sanded and sealed using Pallmann’s high end primer and lacquer finish in the late summer of 2015. Our client just had a new kitchen installed and when the old kitchen cupboards got removed he noticed the lighter floor where the old units covered the floor. He loved this so much he asked Art of Clean in Cambridge to come in and sand and finish the engineered wooden floor.
To ensure we delivered the lightest finish possible we specified Pall x 325, a water based primer followed by Pall x Extreme with hardener as the lacquer,
Explains Pierre de Wet, the owner of Art of Clean
Our team worked extremely had on restoring the floor and took great care sanding around the newly fitted kitchen. In most cases it is far better to get your kitchen wood floor sanded and finished BEFORE you fit a new kitchen as this eliminates the risk of scuffmarks to your new units.
We finished the floor sanding and the client was really happy with the outcome.

Floor Boards Shrinking – 6 Months Later

About 6 months later Art of Clean received a call and the client expressed their concerns that some gaps had formed between the wooden boards in the kitchen.
tramex moisture metreNot to worry – We are here to help! so Pierre went off to inspect the wood floor.  We conducted the investigation using Tramex high end moisture and temperature meters and we discovered that the room is very warm and that the relative humidity in the air was very low. This basically means the air is very dry; therefore the wood floor will let go of moisture retained inside of it, in turn this will cause the boards to shrink in size.

Change in Relative Air Humidity caused Gaps

It was at this point that the client shared the fact that following the kitchen install they also had the old boiler replaced. It all suddenly made sense. Due to a much more efficient boiler the room is much warmer and dryer. Our advice was to turn down the heating and allow some air movement by opening windows.
Once the relative humidity has increased the floor boards will reach equilibrium with the air surrounding it and will return back to normal.

Why the Ultimate Guarantee is Important

Had an inexperienced floor sander been contacted about this problem they might have opted to fill the gaps and re-finish the floor. The problem with this solution is that once summer comes and the floor absorbs moisture from the air again, the wood floor will start to expand. As the gaps have been filled, the floor will buckle as it expands.
This is one example of why it is so important to choose a professional, experienced, wood floor sanding company. The Ultimate Two Year Guarantee on our work means that our contractors will do a thorough investigation to understand the cause of problems and our experience means we will find the right solution to solve any issues.  That’s why our customers say we provide the ultimate peace of mind!.

What to do if you notice gaps in your wooden floor:

Always consider what might cause the change in the environment.shrinking floor boards
  • Was a new boiler fitted?
  • Have living arrangements changed – If you are at home more and the heating is on during the day it will have an impact on the air in your home.
  • In some cases rugs on floors can cause heat to get trapped especially if you have under floor heating on your wooden floor.
  • Is your cleaning process leaving too much water on the wooden floor – that can cause swelling of the floor boards
Always get a professional’s advice before you take drastic action

Tips to maintain your wooden floors

When you either have your floor restored or invest in new you want the most out of it and these simple tips a can help.

art of clean 1. Regular Vacuuming routine
its already part of your cleaning routine but really does make an impact into the condition of your flooring. We don’t necessarily realise but fine dirt and grit rub on the floor like sandpaper. Make sure when vacuuming to use the right attachment with brushes to minimalise marking to the floor. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner a dust mop or mirco fibre sweeper. We would recommend. Pallman clean and go wood floor cleaning kits. Very simple to use and quick drying, can be used on a variety of floors and is pH balanced.

2. Watch out for sprays
Hair spray and furniture polish isn’t something you automatically think of but the buildup can begin to dull the appearance of your floors. Wipe your floors immediately remembering not to use any products that has ammonia in it.

3. Water
art of clean
Excessive water whether it be a spilled drink or boots drying from rain it will ruin the finish of your boards but be absorbed and staining the wood. If you see any water mop up as soon as you can to prevent any damage.

4. Always Remove residue
When cleaning do it as soon you see the dirt before they get permanently ground in and mark your floor boards. Although tempting a little cleaning liquids goes a long way and too much can do as much harm to your floor boards as good.

5. Know the rules about using waxes and restorers.
Of course you can use wax to help restore the appearance of your floor but before you get waxing make sure your floor isn’t varnish  or polyurethane floor as very slippery which can be dangerous. Its always best to do a test patch to make sure it doesn’t react and damage tour flooring.

6. A doormat.
This is a really simple but brilliant idea that can protect your flooring whether it be carpet rug or wooden floors. Use a doormat or a off cut of carpet when kneeling to do spot cleaning it will reduce the risk of scratching or transferring more dirt onto floors.

7. Rug
Over time high traffic areas get worn down and a floors finish loses its appeal, the easiest way to prevent this is a rug. Remember to get a rug grip that is breathable as rubber ones can trap dirt and humidity which could do more damage to your floor then good.

Autumn trends for the home in Cambridge

With summer leaving us it’s time to get excited about Autumn and how to update your home with some key trends.

Metallic accents
Metallic has been a strong trend from 2015 and still continues to inspire. With copper being the most coveted it now going into golds as we get closer to Christmas. Mixed with dark greys and neutral tones will give your room a real sense of elegance. You can go bold pieces of furniture or a statement wall or decide to accent with accessories such as vases, lampshades or even a rug it can update a room very easily and give it a chic yet welcoming feel which is perfect for winter.

Marble
Another really strong trend from spring summer that is here to stay. Now although many of us are lusting after a beautiful marble floor, kitchen or bathroom the price tag can be a stretch. Do not fear the high street are full of great and stylish bargains that still give you the marble vibe you crave but in a more bank balance friendly way.

Pops of colour
With the weather beginning to change it is easy to get glum about the cold days and nights drawing in, but the injection of colour is the perfect way to lift the room and your spirits. Don’t be afraid to go bold with emerald green, mustard, peacock blue and fuchsia all making a real impact with neutrals. Also texture in a bright colour whether it be a heavy knit or luxurious velvet can look really be effective.

Mixing culture
Bringing together global influences with British style can make for a striking look. With strong blues, rich reds and warm yellow graphic prints in rugs and cushions is a quick way to give a room this look. In essence to create this look confidently it’s about mixing and matching and not being afraid to try new things.  Where it’s easy to get carried away it’s about balance and adding to the room not over shadowing what you already have.

Create a lounge inspired living room

How much do you love to entertain friends and family in your home, but you think the entertaining rooms are too small?  Don’t worry, there are plenty of interior design tricks which can help you to create the living room of your dreams.

Even if you are on a budget, these goals can be achievable, you’ll just have to think about spending the money in the right places to get the biggest impact and the correct use of the space.

One of the biggest problems in interior design is buying the correct size furniture for the room it is going to be used in.  Also, if you have a built in fireplace, sometimes these can be quite dominant in the room, especially if they are period pieces.

One of the biggest looks in interior design is the lounge inspired seating area.  Think of long low couches which run along two walls and will seat more than a couple of people.

Even though it’s a small room you have to create a lot of impact so the choice of artwork is really important.  The thing to remember when choosing artwork is to choose off the same colour pallet.

Art of Clean Cambridge UK

For any room, natural light is absolutely the most important.  More the better! But either way, if you have a simple window frame, think about having a pull down blind with a graphic design to give it a bit of interest and architectural detail as well.

Another tip for adding more light to a room is, to take a look under your carpet and if you have floorboards, how about having them expertly sanded and sealed.  Having varnished floorboards, will help with reflecting light around the room.

If you have a large fireplace in the sitting room, think about adding a feature wall with a large and muted design wallpaper.  The use of the wallpaper will detract from the fireplace and is a really good trick in a small room.  It really does make the room fill much bigger and give depth and give the wall height.  A large scale mirror above the fireplace will add impact.

Being on a budget, means having to hang to some of your old furniture and recovering the upholstery.  This is a great opportunity to update your tired furniture and tie it with your new colour palette and make it sing-again!

Because the room is small, it’s probably best not to put a coffee table in the lounge but instead use small tables which are quite flexible, which are big enough to perch some food and drinks on.

Pulling together a small space project on a small budget can at first seem quite taxing but planning the changes and if at in any doubt call the experts and they will be able to advise you on your interior design changes.

Stone floor cleaning and the reason to care

Here at the Art of Clean we take great pride in the work we do and love to share with you what we have been doing.

Sometimes you don't notice the subtle changes in your stone flooring. The colour often fades, the grains and veins get darker and before you know it, that floor you treated yourself to a decade ago, looks its age.

That's where we come in.

This home is privileged to be stone floored throughout and as such, care and concern needs to be given to its upkeep. The wide angle shot below emphasizes the grandiose nature of such a surface. The light that streams in highlights ever nook and cranny and this can, as a result, either bring out the best or the worst in your home.

The Art of Clean has a decade of collective experience and with up to date training available, Art of Clean approach every job as a new exciting challenge.

Just look at the white shine that floor now offers. As an entrance hallway, you'd be loathe to turn away.

Floors, like carpets needs attention. It doesn't have to be by the professionals, but it does have to be treated well. A good sweep, a light mopping and drying, these help to keep your floor looking alive, but if you can't find the time and want a thorough job doing, call and we'll be delighted to come.

Beware the pitfalls of online auction rug shopping | Art of Clean

What did we do before the invention of the online auction?

It was more than likely that we had a look in the phonebook or we had to actually leave the house and go down the high street.  But now with the internet, the goods and services we want to purchase are only a click away and it’s all delivered straight to our front door.

The best thing about online auctions, is there are lots of dealers selling their wares and all in one place.  And when you have decided the time is right to purchase a new or second hand Oriental rug, ebay or any other auction website might seem like a good place to start.

I like many other people have done just that.  I’ve recently moved home and wanted to put something down on the floor, but didn’t want to spend money out on new carpet as I hadn’t finished decorating, so I decided to look on ebay for a rug.

At the time I was looking, I came across a dealer selling dozens of very large rugs, which were perfect for the spaces I needed to fill.  I managed to get the rug at a good price and the delivery was thrown in at no added extra cost.

But I wasn’t particularly fussy about what I bought nor the history but I liked the look t what I saw and took a gamble and the gamble paid off.

But had I been searching for an ‘oriental rug’ then it would be a different matter.
As with any internet search, it’s all about the metadata and the phrases you search for.  Vague searches provide vague results and you will be bombarded with every patterned rug out there.  It’s difficult to what which or type of rug you’re looking for, as there are many to choose from but any amount of research before you go on an auction website will be beneficial.  For instance, enter “antique Baluch rug” to get further filtered results.

Detailed searches will often result in a better product selection

Look at all the photographs and read the description carefully.  One big problem with internet auctions, is the seller is responsible for the description and they can write as little or as much as they like.  It is also up to the seller to describe correctly.  This is where your knowledge of what is real or fake looks like and this will work in your favour.

Research your product beforehand as there are many types and styles to chose from

Many purchasers will add bids as close to the end of an online auction and also if there are many people watching an item, you’re less likely to get a bargain.  But one good thing about online auctions, is that you can see what has been sold before and what was paid for it.  This way you’ll get an understanding of what is a fair price.

Check the seller’s return policy and feedback, this will enable you to decide if you want to do business with this person.

As like with any other auction, it’s a fun activity but getting caught up in the moment is a possibility, as your lot drawers nearer, the heartbeat quickens and the mouth goes dry but there is no excuse to lose your head and get carried away with bidding.  Make sure you have a set limit and know what you want to pay for the rug.  If the price keeps climbing and reached your limit, probably best to back out quietly.
