Wool - the King of Natural Fibres | Art of Clean

Wool is a natural fibre, which is mainly obtained from sheep and certain other animals, including cashmere and mohair from goats, qiviut from muskoxen and angora from rabbits.

Wool is a natural fibre, which is mainly obtained from sheep

The main way wool is taken from the sheep is by shearing.  The process doesn't usually hurt the sheep but requires a lot of skill and physical strength on behalf of the shearer, so the sheep is shorn efficiently without causing cuts or injury.

Sheep need to be clipped annually to protect the health of the animal.

Sheep need to be clipped annually to protect the health of the animal.  Clipping or shearing is sometimes compared to getting a haircut, but with a big hulking wriggling sheep, so I think that is where the similarities end.

80% of the world's wool use goes into the manufacture of garments

The history of sheep and goats being sheared for their wool dates back as early as 6000 BC.  In 1570 a Verulam carpet was made for Elizabeth 1st and ten years later in 1580 an Aubusson carpet centre is set up in Beauvoir, France.

Wool isn't just used for carpets and rugs.  It's an interesting fact that 80% of the world's wool use goes into the manufacture of garments, such as jumpers, hats and coats, leaving 20% being used for some surprising uses as wool is an extremely versatile fibre.

What are the benefits of using wool?

People have been utilising wool for thousands of years for decorative and functional purposes.  The unique selling point of wool is it is durable, flexible and water resistant.  Wool also comes in varying grades of fibre from extremely soft fibres which are suitable to use against the skin to more coarse fibres which are more suited to tasks such as stuffing and insulating.  As there are many different ways of using wool, it ensures that very little is wasted.

What's next for wool?

At this years Ecobuild exhibition and conference event for the sustainable construction and energy market, Thermafleece will be exhibiting their brand of natural wool based insulation product range, some of the benefits of this range is that it is odorless, soft and easy to handle.  Thermafleece describe it as, 'think of wrapping your house in the warmest of duvets in the snowiest of weather'.

There are a number of organisations dedicated to the promotion of the wool trade, including Woolfest 2016, The Campaign for Wool and The British Wool Marketing Board.

Art of Clean and the new year deep clean

Once the shortest day of the year has come and gone, and Christmas and New Year are out of the way, I always get excited and filled with revitalised energy to see that extra minute of daylight in the evening. In the knowledge the days are getting longer and we have a new year to look forward to.

Over the next couple of weeks, the evenings will draw out, slowly at first with a minute a day of daylight added to the end of the day and then after a fortnight, it's a whooping whole eleven minutes added to the evening. And before we know it, we'll all be wearing shorts and sun cream again and venturing outside into the great outdoors and into our gardens.  And if you're like me, I've probably been a bit neglectful of my garden and patio, which currently looks like a scene from from Sleeping Beauty, with giant bramble bushes, sprouting all over the place and the patio looking murky and unkempt.  Unfortunately, I don't have a Prince to cut his way through with a sharp sword and rescue his damsel in distress.

I think the word 'distress' is probably a good way to describe the current state our interiors as-well as the exteriors.  Carpets and floors, also need our attention and after the high volume of festive party goers we have in December, now is just the time to get the place back into order and in time for the great Spring clean and the warmer weather.

Although the weather is still fresh at the moment, (just sticking my head round the door and seeing the bright sunlight streaming though) we can finally have our doors and windows open and let a bit of that clean crisp air fill the our room again.

Art of Clean can help you with all these jobs and more.  Did you know we clean carpets, rugs, upholstery and patios, etc?

Cleaning your fine handmade rug?? Only the best will do! Here's how to find the best person for the job..

Having your precious rug cleaned for the first time is usually a big stretch for many people. Why is this the case?

When choosing a fine rug for your home is not easy and it is usually a big investment. When buying rugs people may sometimes be informed not to have the rug cleaned. This is not totally incorrect as there are many cleaners out there that will not have the correct knowledge to clean fine rugs and can easily cause damage to the fine rug while cleaning it. If you find a reputable rug cleaner this will not need to be a concern for you anymore.

Here are a few questions to ask to help you find a reliable cleaning company to clean your fine rug.

What experience do you have cleaning rugs – Some companies state that they have been cleaning for “x” amount of years – what they do not say is what they have been cleaning. Some firms might have been cleaning offices for the last 20 years and only started cleaning rugs more recently.

Check them out online – If companies have been cleaning rugs for a long period of time you will notice their videosphotos and testimonials of the work they have done will be older – If they have no proof online that they have done rug cleaning for a long period of time it raise the question if you should trust them with your rug.

Are they insured? – Insurance is a minefield – many firms are insured – fewer firms are insured for goods in trust – as specifically if the company hold insurance for goods in trust.

What method is best to clean my rug? – Many rug cleaning companies only use one method of cleaning and this is usually hot water extraction or steam cleaning. This method can cause unstable colours to run. Here at Art of Clean we use a cold water bath and we then have the correct equipment to safely remove the water from the rug and let it dry in our drying room.

Your last question to the rug cleaner you will employ is – “who will clean my rug” many rug cleaning companies will subcontract the cleaning work out – your rug might get send many miles away for cleaning.

Art of clean are proud to be the only registered Master Rug Cleaners in Cambridge.  If you would like some more information about our professional rug cleaning services please contact our friendly team on 01223 863632 or visit www.artofclean.co.uk.
