How do I maintain my quarry stone tiles?

If you’re thinking about having a lovely floor laid or are just about to go ahead and book the tiler, you’ll want to make sure, that when the job is ‘done and dusted’ the floor retains its luster.

Quarry tiles are beautiful coloured and robust tiles, often used in areas that will get high traffic and mucky boots such as the hallway, kitchen, conservatory.  A little regular care can keep them in good condition.

How to clean quarry tile floors:

Firstly:

Clean your tiles with a good vacuum cleaner – but be sure your hoovering doesn't drag dirt and stones across the floor as this will scratch the tiles. Use the hose if possible, with a brush attachment if you have one.

Secondly:

Invest in a good mop, bucket and cleaning product is the key:

Mop Head: Use a Clean good Quality mop – it makes a big difference to the outcome.

Mop Bucket:

A 2 compartment mop bucket is great, one side has the solution and will eventually get dirty during use, and then the second side with clean water will be ready to rinse the mop.

Finally, how to clean the floor:
Rinse your clean mop head in the rinse water and wring it out – Now dip about 3 – 4 inches of your mop head into the cleaning solution and use this to start mopping the floor in a side to side motion working the mop in a figure 8 over the floor.

Do about 4 – 6 foot and then rinse your mop in the rinse water. Dip the tips into the cleaner and repeat as above. Carry on till the floor is clean. For large areas you might need to empty your rinse water and top up with clean water. Ensure you do not leave lots of moisture on the floor. You can wipe your floor with towels to ensure watermarks aren’t left behind.

Are you about to give up on your ugly grout and tiles?

Don't give up on your old tiles

Here at the Art of Clean we can make your tiles, Natural stone and grout look like new.  And with regular cleaning they will stay looking new for longer.

The problem with grout, is that it's recessed and very porous, so dirt, dust and bacteria particles turn your clean grout into streaks of dirty lines.

We use the very latest materials, cleaning techniques and equipment which will remove dirt and smells and restore your tile and stone floors.

We offer another integral part of the process to seal the grout which will protect it from future day to day spills and dirt.

The 4 basic types of tile

Ceramic Tile - is a man made clay fired material and can be glazed or remain neutral.  A glazed ceramic tile has the added bonus of being protected by the glaze itself, but over time the glaze will deteriorate and and the tile will become porous. Professional cleaning and sealing will restore the tile to a like-new condition.

Porcelain Tile - are also made from natural clay with a durable glaze.  Finely ground sand is also added to the mixture, which is then pressed and fired at a much higher temperature than ceramic tiles, which removes almost all the water content.  Porcelain tiles are particularly resistant to chemical agents, scratches and the absorption of water.  This makes it an ideal paving floors and public places.

Quarry Tile and Paver Brick - quarry tiles are an unglazed ceramic material and have long been known for the exceptional durability, practicality and natural beauty and are used extensively in domestic, commercial and demanding industrial applications.

A feature of quarry tiles is they have a very low absorbency of water which allows for rapid drying. Any application of of protecting treatment should be carried out when the floor is completely dried. The processes and products are different depending on whether the material is laid indoors or out.

Terracotta Tile or Saltillo Tile - is made by mixing clay and water and leaving it to dry naturally and finally baking it in a kiln.  The characteristics of Saltillo Tile demand a special treatment.  The unique properties are to do with absorption, types of finishes and with the different types of clay.

Below is our quarry tile cleaning process:

1- We inspect your floor: This is to identify any limitations like stain removal, loss of loose grout surrounding surfaces sensitive to cleaning solutions and any other areas that needs consideration before the cleaning starts

2- We protect your walls and furniture: This is to limit over spray on to sensitive areas during the cleaning process. Please note no guarantee can be made that materials that is extremely sensitive to moisture might not show some form of exposure to our cleaning solutions.

3- Dry soil removal: we will remove any dry soil and dirt before any water based cleaning takes place Apply cleaning solution to the floor/wall: This can be by means of sprayer or directly from a container with premixed cleaning solutions

4- Agitation: This is done by means of a rotary cleaning machine or by hand depending on the areas to be cleaned.

5- Rinse: Slurry (Dirt from the floor and cleaning solution mixed together) with our pressurised cleaning equipment. This step allows us to clean areas of your wall or floor that is not reachable with any other form of cleaning (scrubbing)

Sometimes we have to repeat the cleaning process as described above to ensure optimum results.

6- Drying: After the cleaning process has been completed, we will clean up and dry any areas. In cases where stone or tile has a high porosity, drying can take up to 12 hours

7- Impregnation: Application of a top quality impregnator to the quarry tile is crucial as it greatly reduce the porosity of the stone. The impregnator penetrates below the surface of the stone and grout and act as a repellent for any liquid based spills.
