A few months ago I moved to the area and was fortunate enough to find a job as administrator with Art of Clean in Cambridge. Looking back now I have learned so much in the last 3 months.

I never knew there was so much to learn about carpet cleaning, floor care and upholstery!

I too had the assumption that all carpet cleaners were the same and it couldn’t be too dissimilar to the ones you can hire yourself! How wrong was I!?

 I’ll tell you, I was very wrong!

I don’t know about you but WOW! I am blown away when I see pictures like these. You can see in the before picture there is some real ground in grime there. Using standard home methods would only make this worse. You can see the pre-spray in the pump action bottle; this goes on to break down the grease and dirt embedded in the fibres of the carpet. The technician uses the brush to agitate the carpet so the pre-spray can really get to work. Just look at the after photo! You would hardly notice it was even there!

Once the pre-spray has worked its magic we can then begin to extract and rinse. This is where the fun starts as you get to see all the dirt disappear before your very eyes.

Not only can we bring our own water but we can also take away all of the waste water too.

The beauty of our truck mounted machines is that it is a much more powerful and effective way of cleaning your carpets. The extraction and rinsing means that there is no residue left from any of our eco friendly cleaning products that might attract dirt in the future if not rinsed out thoroughly, there is next to no water left in the carpet which means that with a bit of airflow over the carpets they will be dry in 6-8 hours.

We can also apply a protection after the carpets have been cleaned. This gives you an extra bit of time to grab a cloth before any spillage soaks in. If you've noticed strange pools on your carpet it could be pile reversal

If you have noticed strange marks forming on your carpet, it could be caused by the process of ‘pooling’, this is when the pile permanently goes into a different direction from the rest of the carpet, making it look like there are pools on the surface.

Pooling or shading is a phenomenon that appears on cut pile carpets, it appears in a random order on some carpets, and it is caused by the reflection of light hitting the strands of the carpet.

Cleaning a carpet will not alter this alteration to the pile of your carpet, the best thing to do if you find this on your carpet is to cover the area with a rug or floor covering.

Preparing your renovation project for the carpet clean

Running a restoration project on a short timeline can sometimes pose a problem as this can lead to trades people working in each others way and this can have a great effect of the efficiency of the trades’ people.

Here are a few pointers to help you plan ahead:

Choose the right people
Look at previous work they have done, speak to their previous clients and look at their profiles and work online. Ask direct questions such as "have they worked on projects to a strict timelines before?"


Allow for a contingency
If a builder say it will take 10 days add 20% extra time on.  Then you know 12 days may be a more realistic goal.


Work top to bottom
If you are going to have your carpets cleaned or wood floor sanded and the room decorated – let the painter/decorator do his work first!  Leave the skirting boards until last as in some cases sanding or carpet cleaning up to the edge of the floor can leave light scuff marks.

Note: If electrical work needs to be done and ladders have to stand on the floor – get it done before the floor gets cleaned or sanded.

Make your plan clear to every trade’s person on the project – Let them know the timescale (share your contingency time allowed carefully, it will certainly get used up if they are aware of it!)


And importantly, work out a budget and stick to it.  Just like your time your budget is important.

4 reasons to have your carpets, rugs and upholstery protected

Spills and marks can easily deteriorate your precious fine fabrics and furnishings and cause per-mature replacement.

Firstly, lets start with a little more information about protector. Modern protective applications are carbon molecules or the combination of carbon molecules to make fabrics more moisture resistant and thus prevent spills becoming permanent stains. There are 2 options on the type of protector that can be applied to your carpets, rugs and furnishings


Water based or Oil/Solvent based.

Why water based and why oil/solvent based protector?

Water based protector - Art of Clean product of choice in most cases - offers the lowest environmental impact. It drys fast and is safe to use on all wet cleanable items.

Oil based or solvent based protector on the other hand can offer a greater protection solution on sensitive fabrics like cotton velvet.  Oil based protective treatments can be ideal for protection of new fabrics and furnishings (if safe for the fabric).

Good day to be a carpet cleaner

We've all heard the advice...don't take work home with you.

But for one of our trained technicians it was actually the best thing to do!

New baby? Give your baby a royal entrance to your home

As we've all now probably heard the royals are expecting a new bouncing baby, but it also seems like there are a lot of other expectant parents at the moment.

A lot of changes are afoot for new parents, having a baby can be a very exciting and scary time especially if they are looking forward to having their first child.

So how do you prepare for your new arrival???

You may want to rush out an buy lots of lovely things for your baby...cute clothes, a beautiful cot, toys, rattles, and much more. The list really is endless.

Once you arrive home with all this new baby booty, where will you put it?...Time to start preparing the nursery! This can all be lots of fun.

Create a baby checklist

This will help you be well prepared for their arrival.  After listing the fun things like the shopping and baby names you may also want to think of the practical, down to the ground stuff....literally.

Preparing your home:

Are there hazards? To get the best idea of the the hazards is to get down on all fours and take a good look at your home from a baby's eye view.  You may be surprised just what you come across!  Whats do you find in reach?

• Cat litter tray? (Faeces is very harmful!)
• Small bin ( could they reach in a pull something out?
• Cleaning products? (put they up high out of reach!)
• Cat toys? (could go in mouth)
• Plugs/cables?
• Are there any rust or splintered furniture legs?

You'll be surprised what hazard are! So give your house a once over and move any potential hazards.

Clean your floors.  Your baby will be spending a lot of time adventuring around on the floor so this is important.  Wooden floors aren't so hard to sterilize, using a steam cleaner is a a good way to clean your floor and make sure harmful bacteria is removed.  However the carpet will need a deeper clean.  Carpet fibers not only hold onto dirt but also allergens, so have your carpets deep cleaned before the arrival of your baby, especially if you have pets in the house.

Have you heard about Air freshener hazards???

We cleaned a commercial properties carpets recently and were shocked to find they were using plug-in air fresheners!  Do you know they are a fire hazard?  There have been news reports over the years of houses catching fire because of plug-in air fresheners.  The London Fire Brigade issued a warning about the dangers of plug-in air fresheners after tacking a blaze at a bungalow in London. In a commercial property, or at home, do we really need a hazard such as this? Do we really want to risk?

Another hazard that has been bought to our attention in the press is the effects or air fresheners on our health.  A report by the Natural Resources Defense Council states:

"Phthalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals that can be particularly dangerous for young children and unborn babies. Exposure to phthalates can affect testosterone levels and lead to reproductive abnormalities, including abnormal genitalia and reduced sperm production. The State of California notes that five types of phthalates -- including one that we found in air freshener products -- are 'known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm.”

We hope that this information will give you a perspective on the possible hazards of such products.  To eliminate odors the best way will always be to open windows to allow air flow, and clean your environment regularly…especially carpets and upholstery.

Carpet cleaning to reduce allergies

According to Allergy UK one in four people suffer from an allergy! Among the most common allergens are:
• Dust mites
• Pollen
• Animal dander
• Food (e.g.nuts/seeds)

Carpets are the number one place for these allergens to accumulate in your home. Dust, skin, pollen, animal debris and crumbs fall onto the carpet and get lodged into the carpets fibers. Dust mites feed on skin and so will be living en-mass in your carpet.  Walking over the carpet will disturb the debris and release allergens into the atmosphere setting of symptoms of allergies.

Symptoms can range from moderate to severe:

The role of carpet in Interior Design

One of the most important factors in the look of a room is the carpet. You can completely change the look of a room just by changing the carpet. More importantly however is the fact that almost all of the other decorating decisions that you will make will be based on the carpet. Since it can be a hassle to change most people will paint the room and choose their furniture so that it matches the look of the carpet.

The main role that carpet plays in interior design is that it largely determines the color of the room. You are going to want to make sure that you paint the walls in a color that matches the carpet. Obviously you can go the other way as well and change the carpet to match the color of the walls but since it is much easier to paint a room than it is to put in new carpet most people will go with the first option. This is also why most people choose a fairly neutral color for their carpet, it gives them greater flexibility when it comes to the color of the walls.

In addition you are going to want to make sure that the furniture and the accessories that you put in the room goes with the carpet. Again this is one of those cases where you can always change the carpet to match the furniture but most people will do the opposite. As a result the carpet usually ends up becoming the defining factor in what the room ultimately looks like. Everything else is based on making sure that it goes with the carpet that you have in the room.

Because of the fact that all of your other decorating decisions are based on what the carpet looks like you are going to want to make sure that you get just the right carpet. This can be a major decision since it is not all that easy to change after the fact. Most people go with a fairly neutral color specifically because it does give them more decorating options, however if you know what you want to the room to look like there is no reason that you have to, you really can pick any color or design that you want.
