The important things to remember when designing a home | Art of Clean

The first thing you should think about when designing your home is to understand how you are going to use the space and what you're going to actually use it for.

In design terms this is called 'zoning', not to be confused with 'zoning-out', as that's something very different.

Art of Clean Cambridge

The approach to redesigning a living room is very different to designing a bedroom.  A living room could be constituted as more of a public space, in other words everyone in your family uses it , including your friends.  Where as a bedroom is very private, so you have to work out what each room means to you and that's how you'll get the best design out of each room.

Art of Clean Cambridge

We've all done it, torn pretty pictures out of a magazine and thought that is how I want to live, but it's suggested that you sit down and work out how you live, consider the children and if you have a nanny and how do they want to live in the space.  Keep that rule in mind as the most important thing to do when planning your home.

And then you can get creative and with all the images you've collected over the years, along with the sample fabrics and paint colour charts and stick them onto a mood board.  Now you need to give yourself a bit of time, usually a couple of weeks so you can make changes to your mood board.  And then everytime you go back, it's quite good to have a second look and take things off. You'll see things differently over time and notice things that you didn't see before.  Once you're happy with the final colour choices and fabric scheme etc, set it out onto a design where you'll cost it.

But the most important thing is to remember how you live in that space.

What are those black lines around the edge of my carpet?

Have you started to notice black lines forming around the edge of your carpet? Do they seem to be appearing around radiators, under doors and in particular the airing cupboard?  I'm sure you've tried numerous ways of cleaning, but whatever you do, it doesn't budge?

The black lines are a result of filtration soil. It is pollution that comes from dirty ductwork and settles on your carpet.

In the cleaning and flooring trade these black lines are referred to as draught marks or filtration soil and are caused by the movement of air passing through the carpet as it is attempting to get through the crack between the carpet and the baseboard.  Air contains pollution and it has the amazing ability to find a way through into your home. The main reason is that hot air rises. Even where the carpet gripper pierces through the carpet backing the air will flow through and form black dots on the surface of the carpet.

No matter how clean your home is or how much you vacuum ... it still happens.

So what can be done to stop the black marks around the edge, and sometimes even in the middle of the room?

Unfortunately, because most homes aren't 100% airtight, there is naturally a gap between the flooring and the walls, with the air moving between these gaps.  The carpet, then acts like air filtration, trapping the solid particles.  To try and stop the airflow, with any flooring installation the sub-floor will need to be fit for purpose. One way around this is to lift up the carpet and lay thick sheet of card, overlapping them and sticking them down with tap, and then around the edge of the seal the edge with mastic or caulk. If your sub-floor is made from pine it is better to lay sheets of plastic down and seal the edges. Once you have sealed the floor properly you will then be able to lay your carpet.

So what can be done if the marks are already there?

Once you have addressed the problem of drafts, you can then ask a professional carpet cleaning company to clean the carpets, although 100% removal cannot be guaranteed and the marks will return after time.

What Can I do myself?

Take care!  As you will unlikely have the equipment to thoroughly rinse the cleaning solutions you will use out after the cleaning attempts.  You can easily make it much worse.

It's like washing your hair and not rinsing the soap out.  The soapy residue will just attract the dirt and pollution in the air much faster and before you know it the problem got much worse.

Is it time to take another look at your carpet and get the professional cleaners in?

It goes without saying, as the purpose of a carpet is to lay on the floor and be walked all over, it will generally receive a huge volume of traffic.  And our homes and offices are no exception.  At least in your home you can ask people to take off their shoes and boats, but in an office, that would be slightly strange.  So, it's no wonder carpets get dirty.

Over time, that dirt and grime builds up and because we all lead busy lives, sometimes it goes unnoticed and we generally accept how it looks.  That is fine, if we're happy with its appearance, and, as it's our home, who should tell us otherwise but I would be doing a mis-service if I didn't point out the benefits of a professional carpet clean on our environment, general well-being and eradicating smells and odors in the room.

Last week, Gavin, Art of Clean Service Technician, spent a couple of hours professionally cleaning a clients carpet in Cambridge and even Gavin was amazed at the transformation.

Unfortunately, the cream coloured carpet had received a tremendous amount of traffic and the dirt had been left to build up.

It took Gavin 40 minutes just to hoover the two rooms and a hallway.  He also used a small brush to remove all the sock hairs from the whole flat but besides all that, the results were worth it.  The customer was so happy and couldn't believe the difference in the carpet.

If you're considering having your carpet cleaned by a professional cleaning company, why not give Art of Clean a call to discuss your requirements.

Strange draft marks on my carpet! What can I do?

Every now and then, the Art of Clean team receive a job that we have not seen before.  I'm pleased to announce this is a very rare occurrence, as our years of experience means we have pretty much seen everything.

The case in question included a call out to a house in Cambridge.  The client had discovered some very strange draft marks on the carpet.

Draft marks on carpet

I have previously written about watermarks on carpets and rugs, which gives the appearance of shading or pooling, but this was something different.

We had been told by the client the marks were from his curtains and appeared after a very windy day and it was the first time it had happened.

This turned out to be a very straight forward carpet cleaning job, but whilst Gavin, our technician was there, he also checked the patio door seals.  as they might be letting the rain and wind in.  On closer inspection, it was apparent there was nothing wrong with the door seals.

Since we cleaned the draft marks, they have not returned!
