Oak engineered wood floor - Deep cleaning and oiling

We will clean the floor by means of a special wood cleaning rotary system. (We will use different pads to remove as much dirt as possible). This is then followed by the application of 2 coats of hard wax oil onto your wooden floor. Please be aware that with the clean option, we will not be able to remove scratches.

To preserve the wood as best as possible we would clean and finish your floors using Pallmann Magic Oil-    Please find more information on this amazing product here - and here is the link to the application process we will use - Please note that we will apply hard wax oil to retain the colour and finish of your current floor.

Two applications of hard wax oil on your wooden floor will deliver a beautiful natural finish that is moisture and dirt resistant. Be aware that if will take up to 4 hours* for the floor to cure enough to allow light foot traffic. Furniture can only move back 12 hours* after foot traffic has commenced. (Avoid at all cost dragging furniture on a  freshly finished floor surface.)

All rugs to be placed back on the floor no sooner that 14 days after our work has been completed.
* Curing and drying time depends on weather conditions and air flow

What are the benefits of hard wax oil:
- No VOC
- Easy to apply and easy to repair (if one area is worn, we don’t need to sand the whole area, just sand the concerned area and the oil will be re-applied and blended in.)

Wood sanding MillWorks in Cambridge

Our client ordered a grey floor engineered oak and when it arrived it was dark blue. They were not happy with it so we had to sand trying to keep the dark grain pattern. It worked beautifully.

No do not let the name fool you - You might thing "Art of Clean" ? how can a specialist cleaning company offer wood floor sanding - It is real simple -

The story started way back in 2007 when we a Art of Clean client asked us to care for her entrance hall floor - We did some research and attended wood floor training from Bona to lightly restore wood floors using oils.

This led to us doing a few more wood floor jobs. We returned about 18 months later to Bona for a more in-depth course on wood floor sanding and finishing.

At this point where where in need of more help and we connected with Terry Guilford of Ultimate Floor sanding in Ireland where he was running the largest floor sanding franchise. We attended his training as well and realised we have to invest in much more advanced equipment and the training will be on-going. We where fortunate to have Terry spend about 18 months with us training us on the Art of wood floor restoration

We had an old van and we made it our wood floor sanding vehicle. All went really well though as the wood floor sanding grew our team requirements changed. We are fortunate that around 1 year ago we secured a great team and they have helped us to further grow and offer our clients outstanding service. Late September of 2014 our old van sadly died on us. We had to make a plan

We luckily had our Patio Cleaning van that was getting ready to hibernate through the winter (as we only clean patios in the summer)

We decided to use that van to see us through

We placed an order with Marshall Citroen In Cambridge for a Special bespoke built wood sanding van.
For the past few months we had to make do with our patio van that was turned into a wood sanding van though a few days ago we received the great news that our van is ready

We are so excited about our new van and we can not wait to use it all over Cambridgeshire Essex Suffolk and Hertfordshire sanding wood floors

Since Art of Clean started offering wood floor sanding early last year we had several clients asking about wood floor finishes. Linda Leon recently asked about Bona Traffic and Hard Wax Oils and which

one we recommend… see our answer below…

“…The product I mentioned this morning is

called, Bona Traffic HD as a recommended covering for high traffic areas.  What does your technical person say about it?   Regards,”  Linda Leon, Cambridge

Bona traffic is a good product I do agree. In the wood flooring product market there are only a select few producers of the raw products that are used. The raw product is then turned into the final product. Most companies (Junkers, Bona, Granwax, Eukula, Basic Coatings…) mix their own formulations. The reason why we have chosen to use Pallman is the fact that they pride themselves on quality and they offer a product guarantee no other supplier provide. 
Bona Traffic is a surface build product - meaning it builds a protective coating on top of the wood. 

Our alternative to this is Pallman 98 and we choose this as it has a superior finish and is very hard wearing

Hard wax oil on the other hand impregnates the wood and protects the floor within the first few millimetres.
A comparison that swings decision into favour of the oil is once a lacquered floor (Bona Traffic or Pallman 98 or any other) wears through you will have to get the floor re-sanded all the way through.
This means over time, you reduce the life expectancy of the floor as there are only so many chances to sand a wood floor. (depending on the thickness of the wood)

With Hard wax oil – once the floor starts looking a little tired – you can get the floor deep cleaned and a thin coating of oil re-applied. If this is done as soon as the floor is in need of it, no sanding will be required. In some cases where there has been severe wear in places we can just sand the areas affected and blend it in.

Lastly – Considering your property is a barn, I do feel you a more likely to find the oil finish is well in keeping with the style of property.

We work for Aunties Tea Shop in Cambridge that has the floor cleaned every 6 Months and oil re-applied and this works very well – as for the reasons above Aunties Tea Shop will have a much longer life expectancy on their wood floor. In addition hard wax oil products are often specified for historic buildings (the Pugin designed Church of the Sacred Heart in St Ives being your closest) as they provide a modern and practical alternative to the old waxed or oil finishes.” Pierre

Parquet floor cleaning Cambridge - flling the gaps

Although it’s not always necessary we sometimes have to fill the gaps between the boards before sanding, here is a recent floor where we had to fill the gaps between the boards, please pics before and after. The process is quite simple and it can really make a difference to a floor.

If the floor has gaps of 2mm max we will be able to create mix of fine sand with resin (an alcohol based product is better than other solvents), and then we fill the gaps in the wooden floor, we would strongly recommend that we fill the gaps in the entire floor so that there are no parts which stand out afterwards as being different. However we can only fill the gaps if the floor is solid, i.e situated on a concrete floor, as if the floor is placed on a flexible surface it can cause movement and the filler will come out over time. But our specialised team will be able to offer advice on whether it is a viable option for your floor.

If the gaps are more than 2mm we would need to fill the gaps with strips of pre-manufactured V shaped tips of wood, as if the gaps are too large these would come out over time. The strips are then dipped in glue and then driven between the gaps. If the strips of wood then protrude above the level of the wooden floor we will then sand it flat, once it has dried the next day.
