Leather and upholstery cleaning in Cambridge

Who has had a leather suit for a long time? Or know someone who has? On a new suit, time could pass (and don’t we all know how time flies), when you first get your seating you may keep up with the maintenance of it for some time but then life can quickly creep up. It is easy to wipe it over and it look good again. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get some professionals round to clean it and it look GREAT again?

Leather is one of those funny ones that you get it and it looks amazing, over time you don’t notice the build-up of general grime, there are various types of leather that your suit could be made from, our experienced team can determine what type of leather you have, they will also note the level of soiling and what the soil is. It could be that something has been spilt and marked it or that it is general grease from every day use.

Before our team commence cleaning they will assess to see if any cleaning or repairs have been done before, this will give them an insight as to how best to look after your items.

We received a phone call from one of our clients in Cambridge that had his leather sofa for a long time. He also had some dining chairs that he wanted us to clean at the same time. A few before pictures will show you.

A few pictures from before the clean, you can see the build-up of grease from general day to day use.

Cambridge Cleaning Guide: Why You Should Maintain Your Upholstery

Why should you have your upholstery cleaned on a regular basis? It's a common question that has a number of answers. The obvious reason, and one that many people will take notice of, is that modern furniture can cost a lot of money and, as with any treasured item, you should want to preserve it.

However, away from maintaining the value of your upholstery, it's important to care for your furniture for a number of reasons:

Stop the Stains: Every home in Cambridge has some upholstery that's at risk of spills and scuffs so it's important to be proactive when it comes to tackling these risks. Leaving unsightly marks on your chairs and sofas can ruin the look of your home, which is why it's important to maintain a regular upholstery cleaning routine.

Health and Cleanliness: In addition to keeping the facade looking clean and tidy, upholstery cleaning is the best way to stop the spread of bacteria and germs. Like carpets, chairs and sofas hold onto bacteria and the only way to keep your surfaces clean is by carrying out a thorough clean at least once a month. Cambridge health experts suggest that you should avoid unnecessary bacteria in the home and one of the best ways to do this is clean your upholstery on a regular basis.

Personal Pride: Other than value, looks and cleanliness, an upholstery cleaning routine should be the result of personal pride. Maintaining a good looking home should be something everyone aspires to and that means cleaning your upholstered products as much as possible. Not only that, but you should employ the services of a leading Cambridge upholstery cleaning company to ensure your chairs and sofas maintain an everlasting shine.

Cleaning upholstery with dry or wet cleaning system

Cleaning upholstery can sometime be a challenge. Some fabric can become flat after wet cleaning. To avoid that Art of Clean test the fabric to make sure it is cleanable with water.

If the fabric is not wet cleanable we will then use a dry cleaning system on the upholstery.

How does the dry cleaning on upholstery work?We will use a special foam that will remove dirt. Sometime stain from fabric cleaned with a dry cleaning system can be difficult to remove.

Wet clean or hot water extraction will clean deeper into the fabric. (photo below)

If you are not sure about your upholstery fabric, just give us a call and we will choose the safest and best cleaning system for your upholstery.

Cleaning your own upholstery with 1001

One of our customers recently tried to clean her own sofa by using 1001 stain remover.

Unfortunately she didn't realise that many DIY cleaner contain bleach, which in time after use will turn the area sticky and attract soil if it is not thoroughly washed out of the fabric. If you leave these DIY products on a fabric the bleaching element will also continue to work, resulting in white marks once you have had your sofa professionally cleaned.

She also brush the pile so much trying to clean that she damaged the fiber permanently.

Before attempting to clean your own upholstery always seek advice from a professional cleaning company first, so that you can buy the correct cleaning solution and the right cleaning equipment for the job, call Art of Clean on 01223 863632

Upholstery cleaning in Cambridge

Our client's daughter is a hair dresser so she uses  a lot of hair spray. The sofa was quite new but over time, the mark was quite visible. This mark is probably a combination of hair-spray, other hair care products and body oils. Our cleaning process made the sofa looks brand new after the clean!

See what we could remove!

How do you know when it's time to get your leather upholstery cleaned

We have been cleaning sofas in and around Cambridge since 2007, and would highly recommend that home owners have their leather upholstery professionally cleaned every 12-18 months, as if you leave it too long before having it cleaned and treated it could cause permanent damage to your leather sofa or chairs.
To stop your sofa from being permanently damaged from everyday dirt you will need to clean it with a damp cloth every couple of weeks, however do not use cleaning wipes to clean it as this will damage the oils in the leather. As permanent dirt will work its way into the groves of the leather, which will in time break down the protective coating and could cause the leather to crack and have a grey stain which will be permanent.
Depending on the type of leather sofa you own depends on the treatment that will be needed, here are the main types:
Aniline leather
This is a leather skin usually of high quality that is coloured by placing it in a dye bath thus allowing the colour to penetrate into the leather. There is usually no or hardly any coating (other than protective coatings) on aniline leather
Pigmented leather
This type of leather can be better quality or sometimes lower grade leather. The leather is treated with a topical colour coating followed by clear protective coatings.
Semi-Aniline leather
This type of leather is a combination of pigmented and aniline leather. Some coating on the surface and some colour inside the leather.
Aniline and semi-aniline leather is much more absorbent than pigmented leather
Therefore pigmented leather tends to stay cleaner longer and can be easier to clean.
