Leather cleaning cleaning and dyeing in Cambridge

At Art of Clean we recently received these leather armchairs at our leather cleaning plant in Cambridge. The chairs had experienced much bleaching from the sun, which had also dried out leather, and quite a bit of dirt had built up on the surface of the chairs. So in order to restore these beautiful old chairs this is the process we had to follow:

The first step was for our leather cleaning technician to remove lose soil from the arm chairs, this was done by using a vacuum to get the dirt out of the corners and folds.

After this stage the leather was deep cleaned using our special aniline leather cleaner. After this part of the process the leather will need to be left for a 12 hour period so that it can dry. We then coated the leather with a special leather conditioner which helps it to become supple and pliable again. At this stage it is possible to see the colour of the leather again.

We then had to dye the leather chairs, this gave the chairs a uniformed colour again, they were then left for a further 12 hours before being protected with a leather protector. Once they were thoroughly dried they were carefully wrapped in a protective film and delivered back to our customer. In the photo is one of the chairs in the process of being refurbished and the other one before any work had been completed.

Removing head grease patch from sofa

Our hair naturally produces oil as it's own form of conditioner.  Where we rest our head the oil can be transferred to the surface.  This is particularly so with leather as it is a porous material that will absorb fluids.

Grease marks on leather sofas can often be found on the headrest and armrest areas, this will look like a dull, dark patch in of leather.

How to remove the grease patch:

For best results use a leather degreasing product such a Furniture Clinics Leather Degreaser.  Simply apply the paste to the affected area and it will draw out the surface oils and those that have penetrated deeper.

This product can also be used to remove other forms of grease that may have absorbed into your leather, such as greasy food spills or cooking oil splashes.

The product can also be used to clean leather in other forms, for example handbags, boots, steering wheels, jackets.

Leather care. How to clean your leather?

Like any furniture, leather should be kept clean and free from dirt and grime, which can be abrasive and cause it to wear or fade more quickly.
Avoid direct heat from fires and radiators; you should also avoid strong direct sunlight too.  These things will cause your leather to fade far quicker.

Below are the general care points and instructions for spot cleaning and for spills:

-    Vacuum, brush or dust weekly, to remove dust and light surface soiling

-    Avoid all household cleaning products for any use on leather as they will build up an
unpleasant sticky feel to the leather

-    Light scratches and marks may be polished or rubbed out with a clean dry cloth. Do not rub too hard

-    Dust and light dirt or grime can be removed with a damp clean cloth

-    Cushions should be plumped regularly and  rotated to ensure even wear.

-     Avoid greasy lotions coming into contact with your leather as in certain circumstances this may damage the surface of the leather.

-    Leather does not need 'feeding' or 'waxing' to keep its natural beauty as moisturisers have already been added during the tanning stage.

-    Remember to protect against damage from direct sunlight, excessive heat and from sharp objects.

-    It is important not to soak the leather at any time while cleaning

-    Spills and Spot Cleaning
Liquid-based spills should be dabbed off the leather immediately, with a clean soft cloth or absorbent kitchen roll and allowed to dry completely. Once completely dry, if a mark is still visible gently rub and polish with a clean dry cloth. Never use saddle soaps, oils, baby wipes, all purpose cleaners or solvents. Use of these products could damage the finish and lead to costly repairs. You should find that most spills should blot up easily with a clean dry cloth or paper towel.

-    Oil-based spills and stubborn marks can be treated with a solution of mild pure soap, eg Lux Soap Flakes, then rinsed with clean water. Do not soak the leather.

-    Allow to dry completely, this could be a couple of hours or up to 3-4 days. Some minor oil-based spills will disappear into the leather over the following months.

Clean your leather with an approved cleaning solution, monthly if the furniture is heavily used, but at least four times a year, followed by an application of leather protector. This should be done in conjunction with regular professional cleaning.
