Limestone is, by definition, a sedimentary rock consisting predominantly of calcium carbonate of which are formed from the skeletons of marine microorganisms and coral and is used as a building stone and in the manufacture of lime. The most common colour is white but may be coloured by impurities. The texture ranges from coarse to fine.
Although limestone is used as a building stone, it is fairly soft material. As such it can be easily scratched, damaged by heat, and etched by acidic substances. Therefore, it is advisable to take care when cleaning the stone and get professional advice.
Watch out for strong cleaning products as they could do more harm than good and strip the surface of the limestone.
Care and prevention
As limestone can be very expensive, you are going to want to take care of it. Here are some tips to keep it in pristine condition. Remember we don't want you to become obsessed with cleaning it, as who has the time for that, but consider this to be more preservation.
* As people and pets are the main culprits of moving dirt and dust around, ask them to remove their shoes. (I know that part of that sentence might not be possible!)
* If that's not possible, rugs and mats are useful as they'll help stop some dirt from being moved around to places you don't want it.
* As limestone is porous, any spills should be wiped up immediately to prevent staining.
* Be careful with the products used on limestone and never use generic tile products.
* Regularly sweep and keep a soft cloth handy for regular wiping down of counters.
On a recent job, the Art of Clean team had been called to a house in Cambridge to clean a limestone floor. The floor in question, was in the hallway a very high traffic area. The limestone was white and of course would show every piece of dirt and dust.
Our technicians first applied a cleaning solution and then used our cleaning machine to agitate the solution. The brushes on the machine makes sure it gets into all the groves and crevasses of the limestone floor. Followed by a high pressure rinse and dirt removal. After cleaning, we then sealed the limestone, which gives it a protective layer and will make it easier to keep clean.
