The Quarry tile restoration project by Art of Clean’s team, Nathan Brown and Gavin Marker

The floor is a very old Victorian style Quarry tile floor. The tiles are made of Clay and fired at high temperature. Usually Quarry tiles are very dense and hard. Older tiles like there are not as hard and dense as more modern ones as the modern ones are pressed in a machine at very high pressure. As the older quarry tiles are not so dense they tend to be more absorbent

What did Art of Clean do during this restoration process?

The floor was fully stripped back of old sealer

We used a gentle but very effective steam cleaning method to break down the old floor sealer son the quarry tiles. Great care has to be taken as older floors has very brittle grout and this can easily be removed. After several cleans the floor was then free of all residues

The quarry tile floor is then nice and clean and is then left to dry out. Air movers are used to speed up the drying process. Once fully dry we started by applying 2 – 3 coats of floor sealer – each coat is left to dry thoroughly. The floor was then finished with 3 top coats of sealer.

Over time the finish will dull down though with the right care the sealer on the quarry tiles will not wear off and a fresh coat can be applied from time to time.
