New WRAP guidance on carpet recycling for Facilities Professionals

WRAP, the UK's resource efficiency experts have just published a new guide for facilities professionals on re-using and recycling carpets. WRAP commissioned Carpet Recycling UK to write this practical guide to encourage the re-use and recycling of used carpet and to highlight best practices in carpet specification.

The document shows facilities professionals and contractors the value of used carpet and how to prepare it for re-use and recycling. It also outlines key considerations for specifying new flooring to reduce its environmental footprint; to increase its lifetime on the floor or to minimise wastage in off-cuts by using a product such as random lay flooring (pictured), for example.

Floor finishes contribute around 12% towards a building's environmental impact with carpet accounting for 58% of the UK floor finishing market. Pressure is growing for facilities professionals to adopt more sustainable practices, and as such this guide aims to enable professionals to demonstrate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and gain Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) credits, with emphasis on early planning for carpet re-use and recycling to achieve these benefits.

CRUK will disseminate the guide's findings at a number of events next year including at Vision 2015.

The document can be downloaded from the WRAP website here.
