Over time marble flooring will loose its shine and luster.  The marble will have minute scratches over it so when the light hits the floor it is no longer reflected back, giving the floor its dull appearance.

At this stage the floor will need to be cleaned and polished to bring back its radiant appeal.

Diamond Abrasive Grinding

Similar to wood sanding, floor polishing requires that a very thin layer of stone needs to be removed to create an even level without scratches.  This process is called Diamond Abrasive Grinding because a diamond pad is attached to a rotary machine which is used to gently remove the rough top layer of the marble.

As with wood sanding paper there are different grades of diamond pads, it is important for the technician to work their way down to the finest grade in stages appropriate to the condition of the floor.  What this means is, if scratches are not efficiently removed in the earlier stages the latter, finer polishing will only serve to magnify the scratch.

This is a specialist trade that needs a trained and qualified technician to ensure the work is completed correctly.  Always be sure to check the credentials of the tradesman you intend to employ.

Marble Floor Maintenance

To keep your floor at its optimum you will need to reduce the scratch risk and clean it regularly.

How to reduce scratches?

• Ensure people remove their outdoor shoes as these will carry dirt, debris and small stones that will scratch the marble floor
• Place a good large foot mat at entrances for people to remove much of the dirt from their shoes

Marble Floor Cleaning

How to wash a marble floor:

You will require the following:

• 2 compartment mob bucket
•  Clean mop
• Cleaning solution - We advise using a near neutral stone floor cleaner and strictly following the dilution rates.

Step 1

Make the cleaning solution mix in the one side of your 2 compartment mop bucket. On the other side – The side where you will wring your mop in – fill it with cold clean water.

Step 2

Place your mop in the clean water and wring the mop head out in the wringer (making sure the clean water in the mop head is wrung into the water only compartment)

Step 3

Dip the mop fingers (about 6 inches into the cleaning solution (note – not the whole mop head!)

Step 4

Wring the mop again a bit to remove excess cleaner

Step 5

Now start mopping your floor and do about 4 foot wide and 4 – 6 foot deep working in a figure 8 motion.

Rinse your mop head in the clean water and repeat step 3 – 5

By following this process you will not contaminate your cleaning solution with the dirt you mop off your marble or stone floor and your floors will stay cleaner for much longer.

Honed or polished marble?

A splash of marble gives a home the grand appearance of opulence and luxury, but it comes at a high price so you will want to make sure you've made the right decision when choosing your marble finish to ensure longevity. 

Marble is a durable natural stone available in a vast spectrum of shades from white to black, often with contrasting veins jauntily running through the stone.  It is a porous alkaline material that is susceptible to acid spills, the acid will cause a reaction with the alkaline stone causing lasting patina.


Here are a few facts about the stones finishes:

Honed

• Due to its satin finish scratches so not show up as much.  This makes it a good choice for use in high foot traffic areas such as the Kitchen, Hallway & Living Room.
• Honed is also less slippery when wet so is better suited for use in the Bathroom.
• Spills that cause staining must be wiped up quickly as honed marble is more prone to soak up spills.
• Honed marble requires high maintenance, it will need to be resealed every 6 months or so to keep it protected

Polished

• Polished marble has a glossy finish that reflects the light.  This makes it unsuitable for flooring as it shows up scratches very easily.
• The polished finish also makes the stone very slippery underfoot, which is why it is not recommended for Bathrooms.
•  The polished finish makes the marble more resistant to stains, however spills should still be wiped up promptly.  This makes polished marble a more suitable choice for counter tops.
• Polished marble requires less maintenance than honed marble.
