What is engineered wood flooring?

And is it as good as hardwood flooring?

Engineered wood is the most commonly used product in the wood flooring market today.  This is due to three main facts:

  • Lower cost
  • Stability - can be used on multiple surfaces and has high resistance to changes in humidity
  • Ease of instillation
Solid hard wood flooring is simply planks of wood, milled into lengths suitable for laying.

Engineered flooring is made up of two or more layers, the top layer is solid wood of between 2-6mm thick which is adhered to a further layer or more of manufactured wood.  The layers run in different directions giving the engineered wood stability and reduces its susceptibility to humidity, meaning it is unlikely to warp like solid wood.  The construction of engineered wood also makes it easy to install, allowing home renovators the opportunity to DIY and save the expense of floor instillation professional.  Solid wood had restrictions of use due to the methods of laying the flooring, however engineered flooring is installed using a floating floor method allowing it to be used in more restricted areas.

Can you sand engineered flooring?

Yes you can.  As the top layer of flooring is simply solid wood the same sanding principles apply.  The only drawback is that you will have a limited number of times you can sand the floor, depending on the thickness of the top layer, because each time you sand the floor you will be taking away a degree of solid wood.

Some other points to consider when choosing between solid wood and engineered wood:

  • How long do you want the floor to last? Indefinitely? Solid wood will last more than your lifetime whereas engineered flooring may last 20-30years before it needs to be replaced (depending on thickness and wear)
  • Solid wood will increase the value of your property
