How to re-use my old carpets?

According to Carpet Recycling UK, each year almost half a million tonnes of carpet waste is buried in UK landfill.

Wasted old carpets

If you have any rugs or carpets that have certainly past their best and have gone past cleaning, don't bin them, recycle them.

First thing to do, is take a good look at them, are they any good?  If the answer is 'Yes', then get selling and make some money (always the first option).  Try eBay, Gumtree or put an add in the local paper, such as the Ely Standard or the Cambridge News or do you have a village newsletter, such as Witchford Online.

Recycle old carpets

Could they do someone else a good turn?   Ask your nearest and dearest, are they in need of a rug.  Or, do you have a student in your life?  If you don't have any of those options, donate it to charity or, I know I said not to take it to the tip, but at Witchford Recycling Centre, they have a re-use shop.

The final alternative, is to use the carpet in the garden.  But consider before using it to line a new pond or keep weeds at bay on your gravel path.  Synthetic carpets are made from petroleum products that have been treated with chemicals and cleaners - is this something you want oozing out into your soil?  And although, nothing lasts forever, do you really want to be pulling out an old rotten carpet, several years from now?

More information about recycling carpets is available at Carpet Recycling UK.

East Anglia Children's Hospice Charity Abseil

www.each.co.uk

As of the 18th of October, our fearless Social Media Manager - David Wing, will be abseiling on behalf of the worthy charity, EACH.

The aim is to raise £1000. To do this, we need you!

Now, just so you know, David has what we might call a mild fear of heights. Symptoms include wobbly legs, wobbly head, shaky arms and a slight watering of the pants. To discourage these ailments, David will be arming himself with the knowledge that he is jumping down the 100ft Guild Hall, Cambridge for a very good reason and your money will be spent on needy children.

If you're unfamiliar with EACH and their work, here is a summery.

We support families and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. Our care and support is tailored for the needs of all family members and delivered where the families wish – in their own home, at hospital, in the community or at one of three hospices in Ipswich, Milton and Quidenham.

We deliver a wide range of services and families can choose which parts of our support they use, including:

·        - day care in the family home or hospices, or both
·       -  overnight breaks in the hospice
·      -   support for children and young people (including siblings) and parents and grandparents
·       -  symptom management support and advice
·       -  24 hour telephone support
·        - music, physio and hydro therapies
·        - specialist play
·        - spiritual care
·        - care at end of life
·        - bereavement support
·       -  family information service.

So, if you feel you can help, there are two ways.

You can either donate directly to the charity or, you can hire us to clean for you.

If you employ our expert team to clean, spray, polish or sand, 10% of the total paid will be donated to EACH.

- OFFER VALID until the end of October 2015 -
