Can I wash sofa covers in the washing machine? It's not a good idea!

Sofas tend to get grubby and certainly need to have at least an annual clean.  But should you take the covers off and chuck it in the machine? Seems like a good idea right?

Well.....maybe not. And here's why.

Shrinkage

This is the most common problem associated with washing your upholstery in the machine.  Usually the heat has been put on too high ( I know, I did it when I was younger, thinking "60 degrees isn't that hot!"), or the material shrinks because its too wet or has dried badly.

Colour fade

The second most notable issue is the fading of your upholstery.  This can be particularly noticeable if you are only washing certain pieces of the furniture - for example only washing the cushion covers as the frame cover isn't removable.

So why do they have zippers to remove them if you can't machine wash?

This is actually to make it easier for the manufactures to assemble, not so much for your convenience in afraid.

How should you clean your sofa then?

It is best to hire a professional upholstery cleaner.  They will assess your upholstery first to check the best method of cleaning.  They will then use either a wet or dry cleaning method to deep clean the sofa fabric.  This is the best way to ensure your sofa cushions and covers don't shrink or suffer colour fade.

Did yo know, cleaning fabric actually prolongs the life of it? Dirt int he fibers will actually wear the fabric over time, so cleaning the debris out regularly is crucial to ensuring you don't need to splash out on a new sofa too soon!
